Approaches to Tredunnock  Farm N 51.53.055 W 002.41.915 (threshold)

General

The strip is 20 NM due west of EGBJ.  The mown strip is narrow and 800 metres long hedge to hedge. The rest of the field has no major obstacles but is not mown or inspected. There is a variable slope of about 4% with the maximum gradient around the middle becoming fairly flat toward the Western end. There is mown turning circle about 500 meters along and a concrete circle at the 04 end. There is a slight cross slope left to right. The 22 threshold is 350 ft AMSL and the 04 end 450 ft AMSL. The Gloucester EGBJ QNH works well for Tredunnock farm. For PPR and briefing contact Jim Thorpe 01989 770511 07478 688742. there are no landing fees and no services.

Circuits

Any circuit or missed approach should be to the right but a straight in approach from FIGZI works best. There are high voltage pylons beyond the 04 threshold. They angle away to the right and the land drops considerably to the west of 04. Any aircraft with airspeed concerns could actually descend significantly. For a missed approach any gentle turn to the right with a modest climb will be perfectly safe.

Limitations

Do not do circuits or practice forced landings without prior arrangement. A straight in approach is preferred. However, this should not discourage anyone from going round if they are dissatisfied with their approach.  It is not an unduly difficult strip but the slope and hump can cause visual illusions. It is therefore not advised for pilots without strip experience. Only use runway 22. Maximum tailwind I will take for the TB20 is 9 knots less if it is a quartering tail wind. There is a windsock on the right-hand side about 300 meters in but it’s hard to see on the photo.

Cloudbreak

A Descent to 900 ft on the QNH will represent typical non precision minimums. You should not land unless you can see the pylons. They are hard to see in the photo and that’s how it is in the real world. This will represent a visibility of about 1500 meters. This is absolutely not the place for CDFA. You must fly a significant level segment to check the strip is unobstructed.

FIGZI is 6 NM from the threshold and a track of about 220 will line you up with Runway 22. “2000 ft at FIGZI is a sensible altitude. The defining obstacle in the area is a mast 1217 ft near Ledbury at 10 miles also on the approximate extended centre line.  See Foreflight screen shot

Ground condition

The strip is undulating but not rough. The greater part of the strip is reinforced with substantial plastic tiles.  You cannot see these as they are below the grass level. You may encounter a soft patch but you are very unlikely to bog down.

Information for visitors

tredunnock 2

Do not get low over the bungalow just before the threshold. There is absolutely no need the slope will stop you. I operated a 3.5 ton golden Eagle here without any difficultly. An aiming point just short of the wind sock will work.

Taxying / Parking

In normal circumstances there are few visitors and for short visits you can just backtrack and leave the aircraft at the 22 threshold. For longer stays the area between the tarmac taxy track and the hangar will accommodate one aircraft.  If multiple arrivals are expected parking arrangements will be notified. If light winds mean both runways are usable anyone taking off on 04 will not be visible from the 22 threshold. Take care.
